Humans of NTN: Riley Johnson, Principal, New Technology High School “As a teacher, there is this need for expectations. But I think what is more important is creating a safety net and the belief in students themselves and not showing disappointment when those expectations aren’t met.If you can create a platform for these students to own more of their experience, their ability to feel that confidence in their learning grows. We should create an environment where your best is expected, but not hold them accountable for every failure. They should learn through trial and error and that not every experience has to be perfect or life changing. As an educator, we get caught up in the expectation piece. A lot of times kids don’t understand what the expectations are. Decoding expectations can put kids in a place to be successful.”
